Typeform: How design made them lead the market
Don’t follow the crowd. Lead it.
Everyone who works in the design, or general software-related industries will know what Typeform is. If not, here is what WikiPedia describes it as a software as a service (SaaS) company that specializes in online form building and online surveys. It’s used by companies like Slack, WeTransfer, Calendly and many more!
This type of service is nothing new, actually it’s believed that online forms have been around since the late 1970s with the first one being developed of MIT (of course). But it’s real boom wouldn’t come until the 2000 when everyone really started to understand what the internet really was, how it worked and that it was going to be the future.
I’m sure everyone has either used a form or created one, or maybe even both. They are quite boring to create and when it comes to customization it’s very challenging, specially when using apps like Google Forms. And it look like the founders of Typeform Robert Muñoz and David Okuniev understood this struggle in 2012. There are thousands of different apps out there to create forms, but these apps always have the same characteristics, and with the most important one being data collection and the way it’s presented. When creating a form looking to get feedback for customers you may put a lot of effort to design, but in this case you’re looking to get a simple and clear understanding of what the customers think and how they feel about you product/service.
I don’t know if Robert and David knew that these were the most important parts in a form, but they probably knew hence making Typeform be so perfect on both of these aspects. When entering into a form made by using Typeform you don’t know it’s made with it because of the watermark, but rather because of the design. Typeform uses a very minimalistic design which stands out from other software. With either being the font or the button style they use, whenever you see a form made with Typeform you immediately notice.

Design isn’t the only thing that has led Typeform to success and to lead the market, but also how they display data. Typeform forms collect a vast amount of data which is then displayed in graphs, with numbers, percentages, etc… But Typeform is different, for those who might now know data visualization is a living hell to see and analyse, but not here. Typeform uses a clear and minimalistic design in which data can be understood by even a 7th grader.
Typeform has not only revolutionize the market on this type of software, but also the approach on design and data visualization a form should have.
